Two Honors College students, Oliver R. Gothe and Joseph H. Montoya, have been named 2008 Barry M. Goldwater Scholars. Another Honors College student, William W. Kay, received an honorable mention.

The Goldwater Scholars were selected from a field of 1,035 mathematics, science, and engineering students nationwide. The one- and two-year scholarships are valued at up to $7,500 per year and are awarded to students intending to pursue a career in research and/or college-level teaching. Thirty-four Goldwater Scholarships have been won by Carolina students since 1990.

Gothe is a junior physics and chemistry major minoring in mathematics who immigrated to South Carolina from Germany when he was 15. He has been awarded the Palmetto Fellowship and the President's Award. Gothe aspires to conduct research in biomedical applications of nanotechnology and to teach and train future scientists.

Montoya is a junior majoring in chemical engineering and minoring in mathematics and music performance. He is a Carolina Scholar and also holds the Lieber Scholarship, the Robert C. Byrd Memorial Scholarship, the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship, and the National Merit Scholarship. His on-going research interest is catalysis.

Kay, a senior majoring in mathematics has received the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship and the University's James Bruce Coleman Mathematics Scholarship. He anticipates obtaining a Ph.D in mathematics.

- National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship:

Tyler Ray has been awarded the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG).

Awarded through the Department of Defense, this program identifies individuals whose scientific and engineering credentials will support study culminating in doctoral degrees. The primary goal of the program is to provide the United States with talented, doctorally-trained American men and women who will lead state-of-the-art research projects in disciplines of greatest benefit to national defense.

Ray, a senior majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Mathematics, is a McNair Scholar, the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship for out of state students, and a member of the South Carolina Honors College. He graduated from Midlothian High School in Midlothian, VA and is a member of Tau Beta Pi and Pi Mu Epsilon. Ray has done research for two summers at Arista Laboratories in Richmond, VA. Last summer he worked for Innovative Technology for Custom Machinery (ITCM) in Coventry, United Kingdom, and this summer he will be at Eaton Electrical, in Pittsburgh, PA. A recipient of a South Carolina Honors College Undergraduate Research Fellowship and a Magellan Scholarship for Undergraduate research with Dr. Sarah Baxter a faculty member of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of South Carolina, he is both a Goldwater and a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship Honorable Mention recipient. He is currently working on an interdisciplinary research project at the University with faculty members Dr. Baxter and Dr. Cathy Murphy (Chemistry). Next year, Ray will study at the University for an MA in Mechanical Engineering paving the way for a career in academic research and teaching. Ray reflected on this honor with the comment, “Being awarded the NDSEG Fellowship has been a great honor for me. Not only does it serve as a culminating point for my undergraduate career, but it provides me with a great opportunity to continue to pursue my research interests.”

- Knowles Teaching Fellows:

Callie Van Koughnett has been awarded a 2008 KnowlesTeaching Fellowship for science.

Van Koughnett received a Bachelor of Science degree in marine science in 2007 from the Honors College. Currently, Van Koughnett is a naturalist in Charleston, SC. This award will begin Van Koughnett’s work this summer toward a Masters of Education for Science and Math, with Biology Secondary Certificate at the College of Charleston (SC). On campus, she held the University’s McNair Scholarship – the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship for out-of-state students. She was also the recipient of an EPA GRO fellowship, which encourages undergraduate research for environmentally-related fields of study. Van Koughnett completed an EPA internship summer 2006 in Boston. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she also worked on MarSci, an online journal for undergraduates in marine and aquatic sciences.

Three students sweep top honors at university's Honors and Awards Day

The University of South Carolina presented its top awards for undergraduate achievement -- the Algernon Sydney Sullivan and the Steven N. Swanger awards -- to three seniors at its annual Honors and Awards Day ceremony Thursday (April 17).

Chris Gainey of Bonneau and Sierra Carter of Britton's Neck received the Sullivan awards, the university's highest honor for undergraduates. Sullivan awards are given each year to one male and one female graduating senior for their outstanding achievements, campus leadership, exemplary character and service to the community. The award is named for the 19th-century New York lawyer and philanthropist.

Amanda Kay Seals of Clinton, Tenn., received the Swanger award, the university's second-highest undergraduate honor. The award is named for a former president of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), which sponsors the university's Honors and Awards Day. It is given to a graduating senior for exemplary leadership and for making significant contributions to the Carolina community.

"These award winners have left an indelible mark on the Carolina community through their leadership positions in student government and campus organizations and the many hours they've spent volunteering with organizations locally and nationally," Sorensen said. "We applaud their efforts and know that they will take this commitment to the communities in which they begin their careers."
