Honors College applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space available basis. Students who would like to be considered for the Carolina and McNair Scholars awards must submit all credentials and application by November 15th.

Transfer Admission into the Honors College

Students may transfer into the Honors College from the University of South Carolina or other educational institutions. Admission for transfer to the Honors College is very competitive; the number of applications approved is based on the number of vacancies in the College. Students who meet the GPA requirement outlined below are permitted to apply for transfer into the Honors College after completing two full semesters of college/university work (e.g., apply at the end of spring semester of the freshman year for admission to SCHC in the fall of the sophomore year).

A student admitted to the Honors College as a new freshman who declined admission for any reason may enter the Honors College during a subsequent semester--up to one year after the student would have originally enrolled--without submitting a further application. However, a student seeking to enroll in the Honors College in this way must have a 3.5 GPA from all college coursework. These students must submit a letter of intent to the Dean of the Honors College no later than December 15 for spring admission, and May 15 for fall admission. In addition, we require an official transcript from all previously attended institutions.

Students who have completed no more than 45 credit hours while enrolled at an institution of higher education may apply for fall semester transfer admission to the Honors College.  The 45 credit hour limit does not include AP credit hour or hours earned for college courses taken while enrolled in high school.
All students interested in transferring into the College, whether from another college/university or as an enrolled USC-Columbia student, will need to complete the SCHC application for transfer admission. Non-USC students will need to apply for university admission as well. Both forms are available at the USC-Columbia Admissions Office. The general guidelines for consideration as a transfer applicant are as follows:

  • Minimum of a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale on all college work attempted.
  • Submission of current semester grade reports from each professor.
  • Submission of two letters of reference from professors.
  • Written essay.  See the application for essay topics and guidelines.

Deadline to apply for entry into the Honors College for the fall semester: May 15.

Deadline to apply for entry into the Honors College for the spring semester: December 15.

Questions regarding transfer admission into the Honors College should be directed to the Associate Dean Ed Munn Sanchez at (803) 576-5633.
