Service-learning is a new initiative for the Honors College that will provide Honors College students an opportunity to combine academic instruction wtih active participation in thoughtfully organized community service. Service opportunities are tied to academic courses and address concerns of the community thereby enhancing individual social awareness and civic responsibility. |

- What is service-learning? The National Service-Learning Clearinghouse defines service-learning as a "teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen commnities." The benefits of this type of engaged learning include social and personal development, strengthened critical thinking and problem solving skills, and enhanced civic responsibility.
- What are service-learning classes? These are SC Honors College academic courses that combine classroom instruction, service within the community, and structured time for students to reflect by thinking, discussing, and/or writing about their service experience.
