TREASURES OF INDIA: NORTH AND SOUTH (SCHC 362s)
Dates Abroad: May 6-21, 2012
This course will explore the timeless treasures of India by studying its historical, cultural and spiritual heritage. We will hold four two-hour pre-sessions to establish a solid knowledge base before departing for our study tour in India. Students will learn how the disparate elements of Indian life evolved from earliest Vedic times through the modern period, and how the diverse elements internally and externally affected its complex history. We will visit sites which reflect these elements, from geographical phenomena which are rich with spiritual significance such as the holy Himalayas and the Ganges, monuments such as the Taj Mahal, natural locations such as the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, and spiritual centers which include the Parmarth Niketan Ashram in Rishikesh and the vast temple complex at Madurai in Southern India. A sampling of modern city life will also be encountered in New Delhi, Mumbai and the southern coastal city of Cochin.
