Tips for Advisement

The Honors College recommends you complete the following activities prior to meeting with your advisor:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the degree requirements for the Honors College and your current major before your advisement appointments. Failure to know your degree requirements may prevent you from graduating on time.

  2. The Master Schedule of courses will be available through the USC Registrar. Before your advisement appointment, it is recommended that you make a list of all the major courses you think you will take (all sections) and bring this list with you for your Honors advisement appointment. It will help us avoid conflicts created by scheduling an Honors course at the same time you will be taking a course required in your major.

Advisement

At the Honors College, you’ll receive more attention and support than you imagined possible at a large university. In addition to an academic advisor for your major, your Honors College advisor will be there to help you make the most of your experience. Not only that, a large network of faculty and support staff standby ready to listen to you, encourage you, and guide you during your college life.

All Honors College students are advised by special SCHC personnel whose primary purpose is to help Honors College students get the best education possible given each student’s particular needs. After the first semester, the University will assign students an advisor in their major discipline. Honors College students, however, retain their Honors College advisor who helps Honors College students selecting appropriate Honors College courses, and who will help to insure progress towards graduating “with Honors.” While Honors College advisors are familiar with major requirements, students also will need to consult with their major discipline advisor as well in order to insure progress toward graduation in that discipline.

Scheduling Academic Advisement

Advisement takes place twice a year and students are not allowed to register for classes without going through advisement. Students must make advisement appointments with both their Honors College advisor and major advisor. Students who do not meet with both their Honors College advisor and or major advisor will be ineligible to register for classes through VIP.  Please note that business administration majors must see a major advisor in BA 201 PRIOR TO their Honors advisement appointment.

You must schedule an Honors advisement appointment with the advisor for your major.

You will receive an advisement form from the Honors College and your major advisor will give you a USC Advisement Form. The two advisement forms give the approval of your advisors on your schedule. Without this approval, you will not be able to register for your classes through VIP.

Don't forget to ask for your copy of the USC Advisement Form from your major advisor and ask your advisor who should submit a copy to the Dean's office or student services office in your major college. Some departments do it for you; others ask you to do it. If no one does it, you won't be cleared for registration.

Your registration appointment time, which is different from your Advisement appointment, can be found on VIP under the Academic tab. You will not be able to register for non-honors courses until this day/time.

Other Advising Sessions

In addition to regular semester course advising, students are encouraged to consult periodically with the College staff concerning their academic careers. This should be done at times other than regular course advising, when more time is available to College staff. On days when the University is in session, appointments may be made to meet with a student's advisor, but should be made a day in advance by email or by phone.  Walk-ins will be met with on a first-come, first-served basis, based on an advisor's availability.
