AMPRA-5 is the 5th International Conference of the American Pragmatics Association (AMPRA).

The goal of this conference is to promote both theoretical and applied research in pragmatics and to bring together scholars who are interested in different subfields of pragmatics (philosophical, linguistic, cognitive, social, intercultural, interlanguage, etc.).

Geoffrey Pullum Lecture: Racism and the Relevance of African American English

Geoff Pullum's first career was in soul music. Thirty years later, when he moved into a second career as a professor of linguistics in California, a story about the educational relevance of African American English exploded in the news media and he realized that two strands of his life had converged. In this talk, he tells the story and provides some surprising information about the most interesting of all English dialects.
