Background

Van Kornegay has worked in graphics and photojournalism for major news organizations and conducted journalism workshops for the European Union in Prishtina, Kosovo, the World Association of Newspapers in Paris, France and the International Media Fund in Albania. He also helped establish some of the first free press newspapers in post Communist Albania while working for the International Media Fund. He also worked as a freelance journalist and as a public affairs officer for the international relief agency Samaritan’s Purse in Albania and in Kosovo in the wake of the NATO conflict with Serbia in 1999.

Research

Kornegay's research and creative activity has focused on visual communications and international journalism. His academic publication credits include articles in Journalism Educator, Nieman Reports at Harvard University, Public Relations Journal, American Journalism Review, The Information Society, a book chapter in the textbook Creative Strategies in Advertising and a chapter in the book Understanding Media Convergence entitled “Media Convergence and the Neo-Dark Age.”

Grants

2016 Provost Visiting Scholars’ Grant brought two distinguished scholars to campus for a series of seminars and classroom lectures on design of new media. 

2013/2014 Knight Foundation grant that was a collaboration between School of Journalism and Mass Communications, the School of Public Health and Richland County Library to raise awareness and education of Richland County residents regarding the impact and options of the Affordable Care Act.

2013 Dobson grant to fund a mobile medical clinic as part service learning trip to Malawi, Africa with Kornegay, professor Scott Farrand and eight USC students.

Teaching

Kornegay teaches courses in print and online graphics as well as multimedia design and production. He has been recognized for outstanding teaching at the University of South Carolina with two Mortar Board Awards and with the Michael Mungo Award for Outstanding Undergraduate teaching.
