The SCHC Thesis Symposium is an annual event that highlights the many exceptional honors senior thesis and creative thesis projects from all academic disciplines.
5 Steps of the Honors College Senior Thesis
SCHC 390 is an online class typically taken in either the fall or spring semester of your junior year to prepare you to undertake your senior thesis paper or project. At the end of the course, you will submit a thesis proposal for a pass/fail grade. Students who are studying away from campus receive a waiver from the requirement but can still access information provided on Blackboard. As with any other honors course, you will sign up for SCHC 390 through your Honors advisor.
After completing SCHC 390, you will be enrolled in SCHC 499 by your Honors advisor during advisement. SCHC 499 is an independent study, and your thesis director will be your instructor for the course. Students typically take one credit of SCHC 499 in the fall of the senior year and two credits in the spring. You will work with your thesis director to determine the "assignments" or activities required to help you complete your thesis.
You will identify a thesis committee (director and second reader) to advise you on successful completion of the thesis. It is your responsibility to maintain regular contact with members of your thesis committee for the duration of your senior year. Working with your committee members to establish expectations for the research and writing process, including deadlines for draft(s) to be submitted, is critically important. You should send a final draft to your committee at least 2 weeks before your thesis defense. You will select a date for your thesis defense in consultation with your committee members. Any request for extensions beyond the stated deadline must be sent to Dr. Skipper by your thesis director.
In collaboration with your thesis committee, schedule a date and time for your thesis defense. This date must then be submitted to the Honors College. The defense must be held before the last day of classes. A representative from the Honors College is not required to attend the thesis defense; however, you must submit your thesis defense date to the Honors College (available here). After your date has been selected, you are responsible for reserving a room for your defense. To reserve a room in HRH, complete this online form . Students can also reserve a classroom in Flynn Hall. Business Majors should contact Dr. Skipper for information on reserving a room in the DMSB building.
In order to certify your diploma as an Honors College graduate, the following items must be submitted via online form to the Honors College. Please do not send any of the following via email.
- Final thesis paper/project. Once your director and second reader have approved all edits/revisions, the final version should be uploaded via online form. Every thesis, including projects, has a written component that must be submitted.
- Signed Title Page. The title page must be submitted in the format specified in the Submission Guide. Please note, you are not required to get the Dean’s signature for this title page.
Thesis Binding: Students can submit a thesis for binding through the HF Group website: Thesis On Demand. After submitting the required contact information and paper for binding, you will select the following options:
- Red book with cloth cover material
- Gold lettering on the spine (no front cover printing)
- 60# weight paper, single side printing.
Students will pay HF Group directly. Please contact Dr. Tracy Skipper with any questions.
