International Studies major, Criminal Justice & Art History minors

Ask me about…my study abroad in Japan, Pre-Law, Conversation Partners, and Honors Residence communities!

I am a junior here at the South Carolina Honors College. I am from Columbia, South Carolina and am majoring in International Studies with minors in criminal justice and art history. I plan to attend law school after graduation and want to practice international law.

My favorite experience in the Honors College:  the Maymester class that I took called "Art and Culture in Japan", which is also probably the best experience of my life so far. We traveled to Japan for around two weeks and studied some of the most beautiful works of art and architecture in the world, including Todaiji, the Phoenix Hall, and the Fushimi-Inari Shrine. We also had the incredible opportunity to participate in art workshops, such as making our own washi paper and visiting a printmaking studio to carve our own block of wood in order to make unique prints. This trip helped me realize that I love travelling to new and exciting places and inspired me to sign up to take Japanese classes so that I could go back with a better understanding of how to communicate with the new people that I meet. This desire to learn more about the world and be a better global citizen has motivated me to continue to do research and make travel plans to all the places that I want to visit. I would love to utilize the skills I achieve from fulfilling these goals to pursue my dream job of working as an international lawyer that gets to travel in order to work with foreign governments and companies.

Something I love: I am a big fan of animals of the feline variety, especially your everyday house cat. My favorite thing in the world is cat memes, especially the classic grumpy cat meme, and they will never fail to make me laugh.

My favorite book: My favorite books and movies are both the Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien and I love the message of friendship and hope that both versions of the story convey. I had the awesome chance to see the musical "Hamilton" on Broadway so I am now satisfying my curiosity in learning more about the various historical figures' lives as presented in the show by reading the book Lin-Manuel Miranda was inspired by, Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.

In a movie about my life, the movie star who would play me would be: Kate McKinnon from SNL because of her impeccable comedic timing.

My advice for current students:  For current students, I would say to continue to be excited about college and seize these same opportunities while you are here. It is not too late to get in touch with a professor for research, to study abroad for a summer or a semester, or to join an extracurricular in a subject you have only recently become interested in.

My favorite thing about the Honors College: The free printing! But I also enjoy getting to know the students and staff and hearing about the interesting things they are passionately working on.

My reason for choosing the SCHC: I chose to attend the South Carolina Honors College for a variety of reasons but I would say the main factor is that the college was the best of both worlds for me. It is a small and prestigious college within a large state university that also functions as a research institution. This means that I can have small classes and close relationships with my professors and advisors, but I also have access to facilities and opportunities, such as internships, study abroad, and research, that come with attending a large school.
